As the capital of the Ashanti Region, Kumasi is a major healthcare centre for central and northern Ghana. Patients travel from across the country to see specialists here. Knowing which facility suits your needs, and how to get there quickly, can save time and stress.

Below are hospitals and clinics listed on SeekGhana. Details can change, so please call ahead to confirm opening hours, prices and availability before you go. Each listing page has the phone number and map location.

How to choose where to go

Emergencies first. For chest pain, breathing problems, serious injuries, heavy bleeding or signs of a stroke, go to the nearest hospital with an emergency unit or call the National Ambulance Service on 112. Don't cross the city in traffic to reach a preferred facility.

Referrals to teaching hospitals. Komfo Anokye usually sees many patients on referral for specialist care. If a district hospital or clinic refers you, bring the referral letter and any test results.

NHIS and insurance. Public and many mission hospitals accept NHIS for covered services. Private hospitals vary. Ask in advance and carry your card. If you use private insurance, confirm the facility is on your insurer's network.

Arrive early for OPD. Outpatient queues can be long, especially on Mondays. Arriving early and bringing previous records helps.

Know your clinic days. Specialist clinics often run on set days of the week. Call ahead so you don't make a wasted trip.

What to bring: Ghana Card or other ID, NHIS or insurance card, a list of current medicines, past results, and mobile money or cash for registration and tests.

Traffic and getting there

Central Kumasi, especially around Kejetia, Adum and the Bantama roads, can be congested during the day. Allow extra time, and ask your driver to use the nearest landmark when you call ahead.

Children's and maternal health

Parents in Kumasi have several options for children's care, including the dedicated children's hospital listed above and paediatric departments at the larger hospitals. For antenatal care, register early in pregnancy with a facility you can reach easily, and ask about delivery costs, NHIS coverage, and what to bring for the delivery. Keep your child's health record (the "weighing card") safe and bring it to every visit, as it records vaccinations and growth.

Herbal and alternative medicine

You'll also see herbal clinics advertised across the city. If you use herbal remedies, tell your doctor and pharmacist, because some can interact with prescription medicines. Look for products registered with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
