What to ask when you call
- Services: Do they handle what you need, such as cleaning, fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, braces, whitening or implants?
- Cost: Ask for an estimate. Prices vary a lot between clinics and treatments.
- Insurance and NHIS: Many private dental treatments aren't covered by NHIS. Check whether your private insurance is accepted.
- Appointments: Do they take walk-ins or same-day emergency appointments?
- Children: Do they see children, and is there a paediatric dentist?
Tips for better dental health
Don't wait for pain. Many problems, like cavities and gum disease, are painless at first. A check-up and cleaning every six months to a year helps catch issues early.
Dental emergencies. If a tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, keep it in milk, and see a dentist as soon as possible. For severe facial swelling with fever or difficulty swallowing, go to a hospital emergency unit.
Children's teeth. Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, use a small smear of fluoride toothpaste, and limit sugary drinks and sweets.
Check credentials. Dentists in Ghana are regulated by the Medical and Dental Council. A reputable clinic will be happy to tell you about its practitioners.
Cost of dental treatment
Costs vary depending on the treatment and the clinic. A consultation and cleaning usually costs much less than a root canal, a crown or orthodontic treatment such as braces, which can run over many months. Ask for a written treatment plan with costs before you start, and ask whether you can pay in instalments for longer treatments. If you have private health insurance, check whether dental care is included and what the limits are.
Choosing a dentist near you
Accra traffic makes location important, especially if your treatment needs several visits. Choose a clinic near your home or office, and ask about early-morning, evening or Saturday appointments if you work during the week. Many people find a clinic through friends' recommendations. Ask colleagues and family who they trust, then call to check availability and cost.
