Finding the right hospital in Accra can feel overwhelming, whether you have just moved to the city, are visiting family, or need a specialist for the first time. Greater Accra has large public teaching hospitals, busy private hospitals and specialist centres, each with its own strengths, queues and costs.
This guide lists hospitals with pages on SeekGhana, grouped by type, with practical tips on choosing where to go. Each listing page has contact details and a map. Services, clinic days and opening hours change, so please call ahead to confirm before you visit.
Public and teaching hospitals
Public hospitals usually cost the least and accept NHIS for covered services. Waiting times can be long, so arrive early for outpatient (OPD) visits.
- Korle Bu Teaching Hospital – Ghana's largest and best-known public teaching hospital, at Korle Bu in the Ablekuma South area. It offers a very wide range of specialist departments and is a major referral centre.
- Accra Psychiatric Hospital – A long-established public psychiatric hospital in Adabraka, for mental health assessment and treatment.
Private hospitals
Private hospitals often have shorter waits and more flexible appointment times. They usually cost more, and NHIS acceptance varies, so ask before you go. Many work with private health insurance schemes.
- Lister Hospital – A private hospital (with a fertility centre) in the Airport Hills / Cantonments area.
- Trust Hospital (SSNIT Hospital) – A well-known hospital in Osu, owned by SSNIT, that many Accra residents use for general and specialist care.
- The Bank Hospital – A private hospital in Cantonments offering a broad range of outpatient and specialist services.
- North Legon Hospital – A private hospital serving North Legon, Agbogba and the surrounding communities.
- Del International Hospital – A private hospital offering general medical services.
- Barnor Memorial Hospital – A private hospital with a long history of serving Accra families.
- Manna Mission Hospital – A mission hospital associated with the Teshie/Nungua area.
- Ultimate Care Hospital – A private hospital offering general care.
Women's health, maternity and fertility
- Airport Women's Hospital – Focused on women's health, maternity and gynaecology, near the Airport Residential Area.
- Medifem Hospital – A private hospital with a focus on women's health and fertility.
Specialist eye care
- Accra Specialist Eye Hospital – A specialist eye hospital for eye examinations and eye conditions.
How to choose the right hospital
Emergency or routine? For a real emergency (chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, a serious accident, signs of stroke), go to the nearest hospital with an emergency unit or call the National Ambulance Service on 112. Don't spend time crossing the city to a preferred hospital.
Check your cover. If you rely on NHIS, confirm your card is active and ask whether the hospital accepts it for the service you need. If you have private insurance, call your insurer or the hospital billing office to confirm they work together.
Think about traffic. Accra traffic is a real factor. A hospital 5 km away on the Spintex or Achimota roads can take longer to reach than one 10 km away in the opposite direction. Plan around peak hours (roughly 6–9 a.m. and 4–8 p.m.).
Referrals. Teaching hospitals such as Korle Bu often see patients on referral from another facility for specialist clinics. Bringing a referral letter and previous test results can save time.
Bring what you need. Your Ghana Card or ID, NHIS or insurance card, any previous medical records, a list of current medicines, and some mobile money or cash for registration or tests.
Ask about specialist clinic days. Many specialist clinics (cardiology, ENT, paediatrics and others) run only on certain days. Call ahead so you don't make a wasted trip.
